The WKS Guide to Embroidery Supplies

The majority of my hand embroidery designs are sized to fit nicely in a 7-inch (18 cm) embroidery hoop. However, the recommended hoop size can vary depending on the project, so always check the PDF instructions for your specific pattern before you start.

The same applies to the fabric. The amount you’ll need depends on the size and type of project you’re working on, so please refer to your pattern PDF for the recommended fabric size.

Here’s everything you’ll need, with links to the supplies I use and recommend:

Fabric

Check the PDF for the recommended fabric size.

Choose one of the following:

• Cotton Muslin (AKA Calico Cotton) or
• Kona Cotton or
• Cotton-linen blend

Pattern transfer

• A transfer pen: black Pilot FriXion heat-erasable pen.
• Lightbox (A4 light box for tracing), or a sunny window for pattern transfer
• Paper tape

Hoop

Check the PDF for the recommended Hoop size.

• Embroidery hoop 5-inches or 
• Embroidery hoop 6-inches or 
• Embroidery hoop 7-inches (18 cm)

Floss

• 6 stranded Mouliné  DMC embroidery floss (see color codes and quantities in your PDF)
  

Needles

• A size 24 or size 26 Cross stitch needle, or Tapestry needle

Scissors

• Small embroidery scissors
  
• Fabric scissors
